Pushout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools
YIELD (Youth-(led) Involvement through Engagement and Leadership Development) and Coalition of Black Men invite you to a special documentary screening of Pushout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in School on January 14, 2021 from 5:00-7:00 PM. Following the screening we will have a panel discussion with parents, youth, activists, and educators to engage in a conversation about their lived experiences, disproportionate discipline, systemic barriers for Black girls in educational systems, and how we can work together as a community to address and change historically systemic barriers for Black girls in school.
Content disclosure: the documentary focuses on challenges Black girls face, emphasizing first-person narratives from girls; some elements discussed include suicidal ideation and there are images/videos of excessive force against Black youth. We recognize that Black, Indigenous, People of Color have experienced trauma and that these elements may be triggering. The purpose of this film and panel is to create dialogue and understanding of our lived experiences in order to create strategic and long-lasting change.
